A survey on a pretty little Book Cover.... Your input is required

I'm pretty excited about this new book because it is different from my usual books.
It is a very small size...  6 " square.
I call these books:
This little trademark appears inside the book flap.

This is a new series:
"PIPPITY TRIMBLE TALES"

.
.
Her logo

Her HOUSE

Her Book Cover ...front, back and flaps

.

The book is in it's last stages of layout before it goes to the Printers... but I have a dilemma.
I cannot decide where to place the Logo on the front cover.

This logo will appear on all of the Pippity books

.

  I've done 2 mock- ups.
Disregard the differences in paper color on the logo, all the edges will blend in the final layout. I need some feedback: which looks best
 Book Title on top?
.
OR
, The Title on the bottom with the logo on top?
The title text will be embossed, so It will not blend into the background as it appears to do in this mock up.

This may seem a small decision, but it is pretty important.
YOUR Opinion is important too!

Title on top After some cleanup.
I had to "remove" much of the foliage on the bottom to keep it from looking too cluttered. I used my scherenschnitte skills to cut it off the original painting. Sometimes, unorthodox methods are needed to accomplish a task.

The Book layout man needs my decision soon

Thankyou!

  1. For me the Title on the top is easy on my eyes and features your title. The Logo is darling and looks charming, but I like it on the bottom. I'm excited for you to be so close to printing! ♥

  2. I'd put the title at the top.

How nice to have the biggest part of the total production done.

  3. Title on top please 😊 I think that's all you asked but I'm going to share more~ My oh my, your illustrations are exquisite! That praying mantis is beyond words, and the detail and shading are stunning. I don't know enough beautiful words to describe your talent.

    1. Lady, THANKYOU! I loved painting that mantis on nearly every page.. for some reason, I like to paint bugs.

  4. Def title at the top, logo at bottom. It is much more distinctive and cleaner graphically look.

    1. Liz, If I do put the logo on the bottom, I'll need to clean up he foliage a bit more, but that's simple enough.

  5. Title at top. Logo smaller, facing right as if directing to open the book
    Lovely artwork

    1. Thanks May, If I move the logo to the right it leaves a blank spot smack in the center and blocks off my flowers...

    2. I think perhaps by saying 'facing right' meant to flip Pippity's image so she is looking right rather than to the left. But keeping the logo centered... but thats just a guess. What a kind and humble outlook you have to open up your layout to others suggestions, Jeri. It speaks to your favor! Blessings.

    3. Katie, That's actually very clever of you... and it could be done. The book cover is the most important first impression of a book, so I really do welcome any input from others.

  6. I also agree with the title at the top. Oh Jeri this is all so exciting and I love the idea of Bitty Books.

As always your artwork just blows me away and inspires me to be more creative. I've got house and garden projects that I'm working on right now.

You most definitely inspire me in all that you do.

  7. Yes, the title on the top and logo at bottom.
What a great idea the little books are!!!

  8. Debra, with little books, I'll be able to create one each year because it is so much easier and faster. Besides that, they are so CUTE in size!

  9. I like the first one best Jeri. Just seems like the title needs to be there. I have no idea why. Love the idea of small books for tiny hands. So cute.

    1. Donna, The funny thing is that I designed the cover with the logo on top. But I will go with the consensus of the reader, so far it's 99% "title on top"

  10. Title on the top is the one I like best. The logo fits perfectly at the bottom. This is going to be such an adorable little book.

    1. Vicki, It seems to be that the logo does fit nicely on the bottom, I just need to Mirror Image the foliage surrounding it. Out comes the paintbrush, one last time!

  11. Of the two you have shown, the title on top appears better composed to my eye. Title on bottom is crowded and harder to read by the greenery. So fun to get a glimpse of your process! Do you do the final artwork on watercolor paper at the same size as end product will be? Thank you for sharing this choice with your followers.

    1. Katie, I too, thought it a bit cluttered with the title on the bottom... but also cluttered with the logo on the bottom. I've since done some re-adjusting to the foliage on the bottom....it comes in handy to be a paper-cutter artist as well as an illustrator.

  12. Oh Jeri - what a decision! I'm going against the popular vote and saying that I prefer the title on the bottom. That's after I had the hardest time getting past loving the cunning green stranger...you KNOW how much I love bugs!!! Anyhow, I like the fact that the title seems to blend in with the beautiful flowers - just like I imagine the cunning green stranger would do. That just seems so appropriate to me. Either way, I'm sure the cover will be absolutely breathtaking, not to mention the whole book! I can hardly wait to get my copy!!!

    1. Diane, I've had a terrible time going back and forth on this decision, especially since I had designed the cover to have the little medallion on the top. But best laid plans sometimes falter....

    2. PS Diane, I KNEW you would like that Mantis... I loved painting him 8 times! He is a rather sneaky fellow in this story.

  13. What about title on the top and logo on the back and just your name in that space at the bottom? Or if you put the logo at the bottom, can it just be the oval without the rectangle around it and a little smaller so that it fits in that space with some room around it?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Cathy, It is just an oval... I was just cutting and pasting on the computer to test for placement, which is why you see the rectangle shape. I've since, cleaned up the bottom area, to create more white and I think that in the next Image I add, you will seea great improvement.

  14. People eyes are drawn to the t opp first so put the title there they will still read the logo and once they get used to the boks thry will look for the logo then the title anyway good luck will be interested to see it in print Elizabeth

    1. Elizabeth, Yes, it seems to be the case that the eyes go first to the top... I guess I am just a rebel. The logo is important because I want the reader to know that this is a book series and not just one book.

  15. The way I see it is the Logo has a "cream" back ground and is a "block". Will this disappear and you will have the book jacket color come through showing just the oval ? If so then I vote to have the Logo on the bottom with the Title on the top ! Can't wait to feel this book in my hands ! Love.

    1. Pamela, The logo WILL appear as an oval shape only. It's background paper will match all the other whites on the page. This was just a sloppy cut and paste job by me... I am glad I have a layout artist to straighten out all the bugs!

  17. I like the top picture. I also like all the foliage...to me it looks to beautiful to be too much.

    1. Henny Pen, I like the foliage too, but from a design standpoint, a bit had be removed for the logo to make any impact, it was getting lost in the foliage.

  18. Oh, I prefer the TOP. I think that the name must appear first to the eye, then the picture speaks for itself. Jeri, how EXCITING!!! You are doing what I've wanted to do all my life....

  20. How about the fold/binding so that the logo is a bit on the back and front. Both pictures are wonderful but together I think they distract from one another. And if the logo will appear on all the books the little hint on the binding might be a marker for the reader who looking for that particular series.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Theresa, I understand what you are saying about the distraction; one reason that seems to be the case is my cut and pasting. It appears in these images that the colors don't match, such as the whites. But actually the logo will be much smaller, all the whites will be identical and I painted the mouse clothing in the same colors for both images so that they would blend together. The logo cannot go on the fold, where my title re-appears and my name. It cannot go on the back either, because the Bitty Book Trademark goes on the back.

  22. I LOVE all of your work and I know whatever you decide will be the RIGHT placement for the logo. Personally I like it at the bottom because as the eye scans that page it automatically is drawn to the bottom and the last thing we see is what we remember the most. I do love it either way though.

  23. Oh Jeri, this book is going to be wonderful! I too, think the logo looks best on the bottom. And what a great logo it is! Your cover turned out beautiful.
