Baby Peafowl!

Under the Grapevines...

behind the beehive and towering sedum,

amid heart shaped leaves of wild violets and the scent of Sweet William...
and cheerful throngs of blue violas, pale delicate primrose,
 and jolly African Daisies;
in THAT small garden bed with the smiling snapdragons

3 little peachicks peep with joy:

"We broke out of the eggshells!"
to see the world.
BABY PEAFOWL!
Born in a garden.

The daddy Peabodys strut with pride  (whats new?)

and Aunt Hettie observes from above

On this special day, Minerva the Peahen is one of our many new mamas here in the Hollow this Spring Why, only a year ago she was a reluctant bride hiding in the rushes from the amorous advances of the Peabody boys, but now.....

Ain't life grand?!
OH, to be born in a garden!

  3. Aww, peababies! I have never seen baby peafowl before and so I wasn't sure what you meant until I saw the peahen! How delightful that must be. Are these your first peafowl hatchlings? BTW, I see you have grapes on your arbor. Do they make for a good vine to grow over an arbor you eat under? I'm concerned about the fruit attracting flies. My evening primrose are in bloom now, too. I love your color combinations with them.

    1. These are our 1st pea-chicks ever, I had never seen one till yesterday. This is the 1st year we've have a decent looking crop of grapes on the arbor, so I hope they won't attract flies. I really doubt it. There is an eating area beneath this arbor. The shade those vines are providing is marvelous, and the grapes are Thompson Seedless.

  4. Dear Jeri,

What a regular poultry nursery you have this year! I don't think there could be much cuter than pea chicks (except for your ducklings and all the other assorted babies, of course). Thank you for adding some farm fun to our day.

    Love,

    Marqueta

p.s. Your flowers are looking beautiful!

Adorable chicks. There's a story in that thought to be born in a garden. I hope you write it.

  11. JERI DARLIN'!!!!!!! I love your idea...."To be born in a garden." I truly believe that our origins are in the garden, I truly do. Oh, the day when we are in the final garden of our dreams dear friend. But for now, the precious and fragile lives that crack open under the shade of the trees, amongst scented flowers....what a grand entrance, and what a joy to behold. Look at that proud papa!!!!! I hope you are better today! Anita

  13. I ordered our peafowl, so I never got to see a mother and chick interact. Are they good mother's? And, the garden as nursery is perfect.

    1. Donna, I've been watching her throughout the day and she is a wonderful mother. She wouldn't leave the garden area for 2 days with her chicks. She finally ventured forth and they've been bug hunting all day in a shade garden where the pickins are good.
